Um… Please let go of my cane.

Almost every time I ride the bus someone accidently grabs my cane thinking it is one of the poles you can hold on to. I can understand the mistake, because sometimes people just grab without looking. The thing that irritates me is that afterwards they giggle or laugh for the next five minutes or they apologize fifteen times. They also expect me to think this is incredibly funny. Um after about the 100th time I got sort of tired of the whole thing. One apology will do or if you do laugh please don’t continue the laughing for a long time and try to get the rest of the passengers to laugh. Is it really that funny?
I know you will probably not get this note so I will just sit, smile, and nod.
Hopefully the whole thing will wake you up a bit to realize that there is a world around you that you are not noticing. If you are too absorbed in your world to realize that my cane is not a bus pole you probably are missing the puffy white clouds and the flowers that the city planted on the side of the road. You are missing all the little things. I know it isn’t anything meant to be amazing but it is the little things that make the day a bit brighter.
So, I do hope I woke you up.

But those canes don't even look like bus poles- they're a different colour and are much narrower. Like you say, people who can't tell the difference must be missing an awful lot of detail in their lives.

People can be so insentivie, how frustrating for you.

Ditto what Violet wrote. How on earth could people be so obtuse as to confuse your cane for the pole?

Hard to imagine that people actually giggle at this. Maybe you should "accidentally" grab their hand, then, giggle and apologize...

Adults do this?

I can see my five year doing this but not an adult.

I am sorry to hear that this happens as often as it does. It must be so frustrating. I wish people would be more sensitive and see how their actions impact others.

angela, i can see reasonably well with glasses, i'm 6'4", but sometimes when i stand up on a bus i crack my head, soundly, on the overhead handlebar... hard enough to stagger me, once down to my knees

that never fails to amuse other passengers

it's not like folk grabbing your cane, but shows most are easily amused by just about anything

we 'hurt', they laugh, and so it goes....

It's a shame that some people just don't think.

I am one who sometimes did stupid things too..but i would be sensitive enough to know when to never laugh and apologise sincerely.

I am sorry you have to experience such inconsiderate people and i hope, they do chance upon your blog and understand the kind of frustration they put others through...

Take care, yeah, Angela.

I was going to suggest accidentally bumping them with the cane! I am mean like that!
